What makes a novel a novel?

One of your classmates asked this poignant question, and I thought it was worthy of discussion.

Let's begin with the basics:
  • It’s a work of prose fiction.
  • There’s a certain unofficial length, otherwise it’s called a novella, a short story, or even a long short story.
  • A “classic novel” is considered such because it earns prominence across many generations of readers.
  • You can check out the following link to a neat fact-sheet about novels: http://en73kleen.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/novel.pdf
Now, my question to the class is: What do you consider the characteristics of a great novel to be?

  1. Hah. This is wonderful, because Anthony asked me the same question this morning- and I'll answer it exactly the way I did:
I believe a great novel is a work of lengthy Fictional work. A great novel has a fully developed plot, with unique, and distinguishable characters. Usually, a great novel will leave an impact on readers (for generations to come); thus, allowing us to label that "great" novel- a classic. A classic usually challenges what's viewed to be 'moral' or 'socially acceptable' in society. A great novel leaves a reader with something to ponder, and think about- and allow them to question and [possibly] view life in a different way.

  2. Well, bluntly, it quite simple to observe what a great novel is between what I've seen in Riverdale. I'll put it this way:
As an author of a novel, one is on a mission, that mission to to contradict what the media and society has made us into, which is "ainti-readers. "A great novel in my honest opinion is one that plainly doesn't put any reader in our generation to sleep. It needs to be captivating, eye-opening, and NOT have every single character with an unusually long last name! A good plot, a twist at the end, and ofcourse like Rema mentioned, a sort of impact will be tatood to the reader for life are a good arsenal for a great novel. If a novel succeeds in letting keeping me from turning on the TV and watching movies, then mission accomplished.
