Raskolnikov's article

In Part three, Rasokolnikov explains an article he wrote two months before he committed the murders. In the article titled “On Crime”, he talks about his theory that there are two separate groups in this world; the ordinary and extraordinary. He believes that the ordinary obey the everyday laws of society and are in a sense mediocre. The extraordinary groups of people in his opinion have the right to commit crimes and get away with it. This is how Rasokolnikov views himself, as part of the extraordinary. In his mind he is above the law and invincible. With this mindset he draws away from society because he feels as if he is better than the rest, better than the city in which he lives in. He continues to push those close to him away, pushing him more into total alienation.
