Raskolnikov and his family

In Part four, a very vivid and heartbreaking moment takes place between Raskolnikov and his family. After Dunya ends things with Pyotr Petrovich, the families (including Razumikhin) share a beautiful moment of happiness for once. Razumikhin begins to think about the future, offering Rodya’s mother and sister jobs in the publishing industry. Everyone is excited about this prospect, but this is interrupted by Raskolnikov who suddenly leaves the table. All are confused and hurt by this sudden action. It was like their pink bubble busted and they were miserable again. A mother, sister, friend, abandoned by Raskolnikov.

  1. While it as clear that Raskolnikov was not himself when his mother and sister arrived, I didn't expect that things between them would end like this. I didn't expect Rodya to suddenly become cheerful once again, and ignore the guilt that was eating away at him and turning him bitter. This was quite a surprise. However, perhaps it's all for the best. Rodya was in no condition to be around anyone, no matter how kind and loving they could have been towards him. If he had stayed with them, it's possible that he could have brought them more harm with his neglect and indifference.
